Diorama

Diorama - Mapping the City

Kiln formed glass with dichroic on a bespoke cast bronze base

Traditional dioramas sought to imitate nature and thereby instil the viewer with a reverence to its beauty and grandeur by offering a glimpse into the vastness and spectacular nature of the world. They were also used to illustrate an environment before changes were made to it due to the impact of human involvement. In contrast, flying over a dense city at night is a very modern experience. This modern diorama represents the metropolis lit up. The contrast between the darkness and the light causes perspective to flatten the complexity of street life so that it becomes almost schematic, mimicking the minuteness of electronic circuitry.
